For the new grad students: a good example of a social science blog post

I saw this post by by UMass prof Thomas Ferguson and I thought I would pass it on as a good example of how social science is done.  He lays out a simple question at the beginning – “why is the Congress so screwed up” – and then goes through the evidence.  Notice that he doesn’t offer his own idea and then start explaining why he thinks it might be correct.  Instead, he first points out the hypotheses that have been proposed by others and shows that the empirical evidence does not support them.  This process of considering hypotheses and judging them empirically is essence of what we are supposed to be doing.
